peanut (aka dweezil, scratchy-piles) passed away in my arms today. he was the best cat i have ever known. i would always look forward to coming home, seeing him up on a car or some cabinets, stretching out his head for some kitty-kisses. i’ll miss you peanut.

book purchased…reading ensues
August 15, 2008i committed a cardinal sin and purchased a book at wal-mart today. however, it was a weird book, one that i wasn’t expecting to see there. it was whitley streiber’s 2012.
i remember reading communion as a child, which both freaked me out and sparked an interest in the unexplained. communion was great, let’s just hope ‘ole whitley streiber hasn’t sold out on this one. expect a review when i’m finished.

remembering da bayou
August 14, 2008while packing up things for the dorm this evening, i came across an unused $10 gift certificate to “da bayou”. now out of business, “da bayou” was the coolest cajun restaraunt ever—a place for all the musicians to hang, eat, and jam at night for crowds varying from 5 to 75 people. the jams were the next best thing to the food—even though something would always go wrong, like losing form, breaking strings, keyboards not booting up—it was still the best way to learn the art of interaction in a group.
unfortunately, the suitcase-college-summertime-business-closing-virus hit the business pretty hard, leaving what used to be the most awesome place in town an empty building. as the scent of cajun jambalaya, blackened chicken po-boys and fresh remoulade phantomly finds its way from my memory banks to my nose, i leave you with an audio memoir of “da bayou”: a recording of my acid-jazz group hard quartet‘s version of the Sonny Rollins classic, “St. Thomas”. This infamous “deharmonized” version, complete with not-so-even 13-lets and somewhat microtonal guitar solo, managed to please the 30-some drunken people there that night, and that was good enough for us. There’s even an added bonus at the end!

picking (whilst grinning)
August 13, 2008tomorrow’s move-in day for myself and many others at morehead, so i must begin to pack up many things into small packages. that being put off till later in the evening, i have been watching sweet telecaster videos on youtube, this one of scotty anderson and bob saxton being incredibly outstanding…
pretty awesome playing from both men there–very creative–especially in an “inside” setting. it’s too bad that guys like this aren’t household names, even amongst guitarists.
a coincidence, perhaps, but richard “groove” holmes’ version of “pennies from heaven” just came up on the itunes party shuffle. incredible organ.
speaking of organs, i picked up a modded hammond t-200 yesterday for $100 from a thrift store–it has the percussion restored and everything. it sounds great. this recording is making me want to go play it, which i will do now.
first post, and many to come,
